From 10:30am until noon on Tuesday January 12th there will be a new edition of the radio show “News from the Drug War Front” brought to you by CAHMA, Canberra’s peer-based drug user organisation.
- We will discuss the piece “The need to say it nicer: The language we choose when we talk about substance use matters” by Kara Fletcher and “We are all addicts now: a call for compassion” by Gabrielle Carey.
-Naomi Watts has recalled the agony of losing her father Peter following his death from a heroin overdose when she was just seven years old. Speaking to Vogue Australia this month, the 52-year-old confessed that she's still 'grappling' with the tragic loss decades later.
- We will examine the case made by Emma Sheeran in her opinion piece “Should vaping be banned?”
-In international news, take-home Naloxone will be given to people at high risk of accidental drugs overdoses with the aim of reducing the number of drug deaths in Scotland.
- Top Scottish lawyer Iain Smith, of Keegan Smith Defence Solicitors, said removing the criminal element from drug use will help users to be seen as “people who are in pain and in need of help”. Following the news that drug deaths had reached a record high of 1,264 – the worst in Europe – Mr Smith said decriminalisation must be considered, along with more rehabilitation centres.

- NSW Health has issued a warning about fentanyl and acetylfentanyl having recently been identified as likely adulterants in heroin and cocaine.
-In international news, we will read and discuss Richard Branson’s piece “Rethinking drug laws in a new global moment”.
- Holland will ban the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in supermarkets from 2024 in a drive to get more people to give up smoking, the Dutch government have recently announced.
